Newborn Care Guide: 10 Tips for the First 6 Weeks

Pediatric Specialists of Tulsa, OK, will outline parent care tips for the first six weeks of your newborn's life. There are many tips on newborn care. However, these first ten tips help to answer questions regarding the care you give your newborn.

Our tips combine common sense and doctor-to-patient knowledge.

  1. Take care of yourself. Consider getting seasoned help. Things can become overwhelming.
  2. Wash your hands before handling your baby. Always support the baby's neck and head when picking them up, laying them down, or carrying them.
  3. Never throw a baby up to catch them or jiggle them on your knee. Never shake your baby. To awaken, gently tickle their feet and run your finger along their cheek.
  4. Fasten them securely, but not overly tight, in a carrier, car seat, or stroller.
  5. Bonding happens mainly after the first few hours of life. Form bonds by gently stroking your baby on the cheek or head during skin-to-skin contact.
  6. Help a fussy baby relax through a gentle massage. Ask us for tips on massaging your baby.
  7. Your baby may babble or coo upon hearing your voice or sounds. Babies love soft, soothing music, musical mobiles, reading, or gently talking to them while rocking or caring for them. Keep noises and lights low.
  8. Wrap your baby snuggly in a soft blanket to keep them secure, warm, and comfy, but only during the first six weeks. Avoid swaddling when the baby starts rolling over.
  9. Have all the tools you need within reach during diaper changes, such as a new diaper, water, cotton balls, soft washcloth or wipes, and diaper cream. Never leave your baby alone for a second.
  10. Excellent hygiene means warm sponge baths from head to toe for a few weeks. Umbilical cords and circumcisions must heal before putting an infant in water. We instruct you on umbilical and circumcision care.
